NC Reads (Give 5, Read 5)

What is this initiative? Why are we doing this?

NC Superintendent Mark Johnson recently announced the state’s NC Reads initiative(formerly known as Give Five, Read Five).

The NC Reads initiative has three goals:

·         ensure that preschool and elementary students have books to read at home;

·         engage schools and community service organizations in collecting books or funding for books to donate to elementary and preschool children; and

·         provide an online resource to easily connect volunteers and donors to local book drives.

 The goal of the book drive is to ensure that students have at least five books to read over the summer break to help prevent summer reading loss.

What is my role in this initiative?

Teachers will collect books from students during the week of May 15-19. Each day they will count and write the # of books that their students donated using the recording sheet from Wheeler. At the end of the week, the recording sheet will be turned into Wheeler. Books will be taken to Room 115 during arrival by a designated student helper from each classroom (8:45-9:15). Student council helpers will take it from there.

Teachers may also donate books!!!!!!!!!!
